Xreal put a price on its Aura glasses this morning, $1,279, and opened preorders. Then, a couple of paragraphs into the press release, comes the part that matters: only people who already paid a reservation deposit before today can order, and everyone else waits for general orders "in the coming weeks." That's a very 2026 kind of launch, and once you notice it, you see it everywhere.
So for today's drop we went back through the launches we've covered since Monday, added this morning's news, and asked one plain question of each: can you actually use it today? Out of ten announcements, the honest answer is yes for three, and all three come labeled beta, preview or experimental.
The three you can try right now
Start with the ones that are real today. Anthropic's Claude add-on for Google Docs, Sheets and Slides is a public beta on every paid Claude plan, so if your team already pays for Claude, a Workspace admin can switch it on this afternoon. Mistral Large 4 is callable through a preview API at $1.36 per million input tokens and $4.18 per million output, which we priced out in our Mistral vs Reflection comparison, even though the downloadable weights aren't out yet.
The newest one is Google's Playground, an experimental platform that launched today for US users 18 and older. You describe a game in a few text prompts, it builds something playable, and you can share it or publish it for other people to try. Google says how much you can create depends on your Google One tier, and the bigger hook, an integration with Unity Spark for more serious 3D games, is still "coming soon," with Unity's own closed beta not open yet. So even the launch that's live today has a waiting room attached.
Everything else has a date, or a vague promise of one
The rest of the list sorts into three groups. The first is "later this month." Mistral told reporters to expect Large 4's weights around October 27, which is 20 days from today. Reflection says Beam's Apache 2.0 weights land "later this month," and you need a waitlist spot to try it before then. Meta and Sierra's Personal Agent Protocol has no spec at all yet, just a promise of a v0.1 draft in October, so there's nothing for a developer to build against today.
The second group is hardware that ships "soon" or "next year." Xreal's Aura is the most concrete of these. CEO Chi Xu told The Verge that the first 2,000 Founder's Edition pairs ship this year, and the glasses launch in the US, Canada, Japan and South Korea first, with other markets in 2027. Pimax's Crystal Pro takes a $1 reservation now but is slated for next year. And Amazon's new Ring Smart Lock, which you can recharge by turning its thumb-turn dial when the battery dies, costs $249 and is expected in the US in early 2027, pending FCC approval. That last bit is worth reading literally. A wireless gadget generally can't be sold in the US until the FCC signs off, so "early 2027" depends on paperwork Amazon doesn't fully control.
The third group has no date at all. Skydance says HBO Max, Paramount+ and Discovery+ will become one service "over time," with no name, price or launch window. Ethereum's Glamsterdam upgrade is live on the Sepolia test network, where we watched the gas limit climb to 199 million in about 11 hours, but mainnet doesn't have a fork date yet.
The whole list, sorted by when you get it
| Announcement | Price | Can you use it today? | When the rest arrives |
|---|---|---|---|
| Claude for Google Workspace | Included with paid Claude plans | Yes, public beta | No date for a full release |
| Mistral Large 4 | $1.36 in / $4.18 out per million tokens | Yes, preview API | Weights around Oct 27 (20 days) |
| Google Playground | Creation limits vary by Google One tier | Yes, US adults, experimental | Unity Spark integration "soon" |
| Reflection Beam | Not announced | Waitlist only | Weights "later this month" |
| Personal Agent Protocol | Open standard | No | v0.1 spec due in October |
| Xreal Aura | $1,279 or $1,499 | Preorder, reservation holders only | 2,000 Founder's pairs this year |
| Pimax Crystal Pro | $1,399, or $1,899 with 60G kit | $1 reservation | Next year |
| Ring Smart Lock | $249 | No | Early 2027, pending FCC |
| Skydance's merged streaming app | Not announced | No | "Over time" |
| Ethereum Glamsterdam on mainnet | Free | Testnet only | No mainnet date yet |
One fun bit of math falls out of that table. Face computers are clustering around the same price. Aura's $1,279 is $20 less than Meta's VR Glasses, which The Verge says aren't due until spring 2027, and $120 less than a Crystal Pro, so three very different headsets announced within weeks of each other all sit inside a $120 band. None of the three is something you can wear on your face this week.
How we'd treat a "coming soon"
This part is Geeknewz's opinion. A preorder is a bet on a date, so it's worth asking what you lose if the date slips. Pimax's $1 reservation is a cheap bet even if it isn't refundable, while a full Aura preorder ties up real money for a ship date described only as "weeks away." If you're picking an AI model for a project, build on what you can call today and treat the October weights as a bonus if they show up on time. And for the streaming merger and the Ring lock, there's nothing to do except keep your current setup and check back when there's a price.
The broader pattern is that announcements have become a way to reserve attention, and sometimes your deposit, well before a product is ready. That's not a scandal, and some of these will land right on schedule. It just means the most useful word in any launch post is usually the one right after "available."
