Weekly streaming guide: Carrie, Coven Academy, Netflix

Vintage film reels and loose film strips on a light surface

Friday through next Thursday is one of those streaming weeks where every app wants to be your whole weekend. Netflix drops a dating-app series, an F1 doc, and Tyler Perry's latest on the same day Disney+ and Hulu unload a teen-witch season and a full Adventure Time side-quest dump. Prime is quieter until Wednesday, then Mike Flanagan's eight-episode Carrie lands all at once. You do not need all three logins. You need one clear "watch this first" call and a short list of what is actually worth finishing.

Geeknewz's view for the week of October 2–8: if horror is your October mood, hold a night for Carrie on Prime Video on the 7th. If you want something you can start tonight without waiting, open Disney+ for Coven Academy or Netflix for the Schumacher doc and the leftovers of East of Eden. Everything else is seasoning.

What lands this weekend

On Netflix, Friday's originals are #Love (rival dating-app founders, a 60-day challenge), Schumacher '94 — The Birth of a Legend (Michael Schumacher's first world title, built from interviews and archive), and Tyler Perry's Doing Life (letters across a prison wall, about 1 hour 47 minutes per weekend roundups). Netflix Tudum lists those three for October 2, with Blue Box Season 2 on the 4th and the coastal creature series Below on the 8th. That lines up with the week-of original tracker on NewOnNetflix.

If you already started Zoe Kazan's seven-episode East of Eden (Florence Pugh as Cathy, all episodes from October 1), keep going. Episode runtimes run roughly 51 to 68 minutes, so the whole limited series is about seven hours if you sit with it. That is still the prestige Netflix bet for early October, but it is not a new Friday dump, so treat it as unfinished business rather than this week's shiny object.

Disney+ and Hulu are the louder Friday openers. Per Disney's own October releases page, Coven Academy Season 1 arrives October 2 with all episodes streaming, alongside Adventure Time: Side Quests Season 2 (also a full drop) and Pupstruction Season 3 for kids. Hulu also adds The Substance into the Halloween pile and starts Tokyo Revengers: War of the Three Titans Arc. FX's American Horror Story: 13 already started October 1 on Hulu, so if that is your weekly appointment show, you are already mid-season while the teen-witch binge sits ready.

Coven Academy is the Disney+ pick if you want a complete season tonight: New Orleans magic school, teenage coven, forbidden romance, Tim Federle as creator, Malina Weissman in the cast. It is built to binge. Pair it with a short ACL Fest livestream window if you still have energy for music, then stop before you open a third app.

Wednesday belongs to Carrie

Prime Video's early-week adds are lighter originals and a lot of library. Us Weekly's October list has Amazon Original Prefiero la Muerte (I Would Rather Die) Season 1 on October 2, plus Now You See Me: Now You Don't and the Margot Robbie / Jacob Elordi Wuthering Heights. October 4 brings Chucky Seasons 1–3, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, and anime original The Seven Knights of the Marronnier Kingdom.

Then October 7 is the reason to keep Prime active this week. About Amazon confirms all eight episodes of Mike Flanagan's Carrie drop the same day worldwide. Summer H. Howell stars as Carrie White, Samantha Sloyan as Margaret, and Stephen King executive produces. Flanagan writes the series and directs four episodes. Episode titles run like a high-school schedule (from "First Period" through "AP Physics"), and reporting that cites Prime's rollout pegs each episode around an hour, so plan on roughly eight hours if you clear the set in one stretch.

That table is the week in one glance. Two full-season dumps you can start Friday, one prestige leftover on Netflix, and one Wednesday horror event that is the only title here that can justify renewing Prime on its own.

Geeknewz picks, and what is leaving

One pick per login, stated plainly:

  • Netflix: Finish East of Eden if you care about the Pugh / Kazan prestige bet; otherwise start Friday with Schumacher '94 if you want a contained, non-series night.
  • Prime Video: Clear the calendar for Carrie on October 7. Skip the Bond and Wick library noise unless you specifically came for that.
  • Disney+ / Hulu: Coven Academy first. Keep AHS: 13 as your weekly drip. Save VisionQuest for later in the month (October 14 on Disney+).

Leaving soon matters this week too. Tudum's October exit list highlights Dawson's Creek, Nurse Jackie, Poldark, and the five Hunger Games films among the big names leaving Netflix in the US this month. Secondary trackers such as What's on Netflix put Dawson's Creek around October 3 and Nurse Jackie on October 7, with the Hunger Games pack headed out October 14 (the same day those films show up on Hulu's October slate). If any of those are unfinished comfort rewatches, do them before the new premieres eat the queue.

Watch this first: Carrie if you can wait until Wednesday and you want the week's event series. Start tonight with Coven Academy if you need a full season before the work week returns. Treat Netflix as the supporting player this week unless East of Eden still has your attention. One app, one finishable stack, then go outside.
