Sennheiser Momentum 5 review: 57 hours for under $400

Premium wireless headphones keep landing in the same $300–$450 band, and most of them promise the same three things: nicer drivers, smarter noise canceling, and enough battery that you stop thinking about the charger. TechCrunch's Aisha Malik spent weeks with Sennheiser's Momentum 5 Wireless and came away arguing the pair actually separates itself on endurance and value. We checked that against Sennheiser's May launch materials and the current U.S. product page.

The short version: list price sits at $399.99 in the press release ($399.95 on Sennheiser's U.S. store as of this writing), battery life is rated up to 57 hours with ANC on, and the ANC mic count doubled to eight versus Momentum 4. TechCrunch says the battery number held up in real use, which is the claim that matters more than another marketing slide.

Where Momentum 5 sits against its own sibling

Sennheiser's comparison chart on the product page is unusually clear, so we pulled the deltas that change a buy decision rather than every codec checkbox.

Notice the battery rating actually ticks down from Momentum 4's 60-hour figure to 57. That looks like a loss until you factor in the replaceable cell and the heavier ANC stack. Sennheiser's bet is that you will keep the headphones for years by swapping the pack with a Phillips screwdriver instead of retiring the whole pair when capacity fades. TechCrunch called that out as a real differentiator against Sony and Apple flagships that still treat the battery as sealed.

What the hands-on actually heard

Malik describes the tuning as balanced: natural vocals, bass that stays in its lane, and enough resolution to catch background harmonies cheaper cans smear. Dolby Atmos support is there for supported content. On ANC, she found voices and nearby chatter quieter after the mic doubling, though not in the "erase a jet engine" fantasy class. Comfort sat a notch below the Sony WH-1000XM6 and AirPods Max 2 feel she has used, which she framed as an acceptable trade at a lower price.

The endurance comparison in that review is the sticky number for shoppers. TechCrunch puts Momentum 5's 57-hour rating at roughly twice the WH-1000XM6 and nearly three times AirPods Max 2. A ten-minute top-up is rated for up to seven hours, and a full charge takes about two hours on Sennheiser's spec sheet. If you fly long haul or hate midweek charging, that math is the story.

App side, Smart Control Plus adds the 8-band EQ, adjustable ANC depth, anti-wind mode, and a listening-test Sound Personalization pass. None of that is unique in 2026, but it is the expected control surface if you are already in Sennheiser's ecosystem.

Context helps if you are deciding between generations. Sennheiser announced Momentum 5 on May 25–26, 2026, with U.S. availability from June 16 at $399.99. TechCrunch's late-September review is not a launch-day first look; it is a longer wear test after the headphones have been in stores for months. That is useful, because battery and comfort claims either survive real weeks of use or they do not.

One practical shopping note from the official materials: colors include Black, White, and Denim in the launch kit, and the U.S. store currently highlights a Bronze finish as well. In the box you get the headphones, a thinner carry case, USB-C charging cable, and a 3.5 mm analog cable for planes and older jacks. If you game on PC and want the lowest latency path, Sennheiser lists a gaming mode with the optional BTD 700 dongle on the Momentum 5 comparison chart.

Who should buy it

Buy Momentum 5 if you want flagship-adjacent sound and ANC without paying Sony or Apple's top sticker, and especially if a user-swappable battery matters more to you than shaving three hours off a paper spec versus Momentum 4. Wait or look elsewhere if comfort is your non-negotiable and you already love how XM6 or AirPods Max 2 sit for eight-hour days. Geeknewz's view: the review and the official chart agree that endurance plus repairability is the pitch, not a radical redesign of the Momentum sound.
