Nothing's stable Android 17 update is reaching more of its affordable phones. October 30 firmware announcements cover the Phone (3a), Phone (3a) Pro, Phone (4a) and Phone (4a) Pro, with changes to notifications, display controls and the camera. This is the official Nothing OS 5.0 release, rather than another invitation to test a beta.

The important distinction for owners is that an announced rollout isn't an immediate download for every phone. Nothing is distributing the firmware in stages. If your update screen is empty, that alone doesn't mean your handset has been left out.

Start with the controls you'll actually use

Nothing's Phone (3a) series changelog describes an option to give notifications and Quick Settings separate panels. The switch lives under Settings > Notifications > General > Notifications and Quick Settings. You can also reorganize several home-screen icons together by holding down on the home screen and choosing Arrange. Try these before rebuilding your whole home screen: they change familiar tasks without requiring you to adopt a new app.

For the newer model, the Phone (4a) changelog lists Expanded Dark theme, which extends dark styling to many apps without their own support, and a control for HDR brightness. The camera adds Dual-view Video for simultaneous front-and-rear recording, alongside interface changes and improvements covering zoom, close-ups and QR scanning. Those are manufacturer-listed changes, not independently tested image-quality gains.

The Phone (4a) Pro release notes include a dedicated Glyph app in the app drawer and faster Essential Voice transcriptions. Nothing recommends backing up photos, contacts and call logs before upgrading. It also warns that installation can temporarily increase warmth and power consumption; that should settle afterward.

Check for the update, not a beta invitation

Open Settings > System > System updates to check for the download. Nothing's OS 5.0 feature and rollout guide says the general release arrives as a normal over-the-air update, including for existing beta participants. You don't need to leave the beta first.

That overview still lists an indicative early-November window for these four models, while the newer firmware posts announce their release. Neither is a promise of an arrival date for every handset. The Phone (3a) Lite is a separate case: its listed window is late December.

Also, not everything advertised alongside OS 5.0 is part of the firmware download. Essential Space updates arrive separately through Google Play, with its redesigned capture experience planned from November. Back up first, install when the stable update appears, and check the app updates separately rather than assuming a missing feature means the upgrade failed.
