Netflix is testing a new route through the familiar question of what to watch. Announced November 3, AI Discover starts with themes based on mood, company or available time, then lets viewers narrow the recommendations. AI helps generate those themes, according to Netflix’s announcement.
There is a useful control alongside the browsing: “Tune Your Recommendations” lets viewers retain a suggestion or request that a title stop appearing in AI Discover.
Availability is the immediate catch. The initial group is small: US members using Netflix in English on supported TVs. Netflix plans to expand access over coming weeks. Eligible viewers can find Discover in the TV’s top navigation, marked with a red gem and a New label. Treat this as an experiment, rather than a feature every subscriber should already have.
What this changes about choosing a show
The interesting idea is giving a viewing session an explicit starting point. A service can know that you like long dramas without knowing whether tonight is the right time to begin one. Asking viewers to choose the kind of evening they want could make that distinction easier. Whether it actually shortens the search will depend on the recommendations, not just the interface.
Netflix’s explanation of its existing recommendation system provides useful context. Its suggestions already draw on viewing history, ratings, similar viewers and information about titles. The company also considers factors such as time of day, language, device and how long someone watches. Personalization extends to which rows appear and the order of titles within them. Recent viewing carries more weight than older activity.
That makes this a change to how viewers steer discovery, rather than the arrival of personalization itself.
What to do while you wait
There is already a practical way to give Netflix clearer feedback. Its rating guidance distinguishes between a thumbs-up for something you like, two thumbs-up for something you love and a thumbs-down for something that is not for you. Those ratings help shape suggestions, alongside viewing history and the tastes of similar members.
For now, use those existing controls to reflect what you actually enjoy. If the new tab appears, try it against the same simple standard: does it help you settle on a title faster? A recommendation feature earns its place when it gets you watching, rather than adding another place to browse.
