Microsoft has demonstrated Edge updating without closing the work in your tabs, but you can’t turn that feature on yet. Its October 15 announcement describes an early prototype, not a change already shipping in the browser.
The useful distinction is between keeping a browser session running through an update and choosing a quieter moment to restart it. Edge already offers the second approach. If you’ve been postponing an update because you’re filling out a form or working through a long session, the demonstration isn’t a reason to keep waiting.
What the demonstration actually shows
In the Microsoft Edge team’s update demonstration, the browser and its tabs move to a new version while an unfinished form stays open. The company says the prototype is early in development and isn’t in production code or Chromium.
The available option, called Restart to update on idle and previously named Instant Updates, still relaunches Edge. It applies a pending update while the device is idle and restores open tabs. That’s a scheduling improvement, rather than the uninterrupted transition shown in the prototype.
That difference matters when deciding what to trust with unfinished work. A compelling demonstration can show a direction without establishing how a released feature will behave across the websites, extensions and sessions you depend on. Treat the demo as a preview, not a promise about the browser on your computer.
Check the browser you have
The immediate action is straightforward. Open Edge’s three-dot menu, choose Help and feedback, then About Microsoft Edge. You can also enter edge://settings/help in the address bar. The current update instructions explain that this page checks for updates and that a Restart prompt, when shown, completes the installation.
Before doing that, save or submit work you don’t want to reconstruct. Pick a deliberate break rather than leaving the decision to the next busy moment.
If an update control is missing or greyed out on a work computer, the update-settings guidance says an organization’s management policies may be responsible. Ask your IT team rather than trying to work around its settings. The same guidance notes that downloading updates over a metered connection can incur charges.
For now, use the update status your installed browser shows. Complete a pending restart when your work is saved, and judge restart-free updating when there’s a released version to evaluate.
