Google’s Kotlin agent toolkit gives local AI a seat at the table

Google announced general availability of ADK for Kotlin 1.0 on September 9, 2026. The toolkit lets developers build agents in Kotlin, with support for Android and server-side applications.

The announcement describes coordinated agents, resumable sessions and confirmation flows that can pause work for user input. It also includes extensions for on-device models and cloud-backed workflows.

Local is a choice, not a magic sticker

The project repository distinguishes LiteRT-LM running models on the device from Firebase AI using cloud inference. Its Android ML Kit integration is labelled beta, with tool calling not yet supported there. Those differences matter more than the umbrella promise of an “AI agent.”

For developers, the interesting possibility is deciding which tasks can remain local and which need a server. For everyone else, the useful question is simpler: where is this app sending the work?

Geeknewz has not tested the toolkit. Google’s release announcement establishes what it offers, not how reliably every application built with it will behave. Check the current repository before adopting a version; it can advance beyond the announced 1.0 release.
