Geeknewz exclusive timeline and Skills-vs-Gems comparison, built from Google's Workspace Updates post (Sep 30, 2026), the Gemini product blog, the Oct 2 Workspace weekly recap, and independent coverage from The Verge. Dates and plan limits are Google's; no invented seat counts.
If you saved a carefully tuned Gem for brand voice, lesson plans, or vendor memos, Google is moving that habit onto Skills. Workspace Rapid Release domains start getting Skills on October 5, 2026, which is two days from this writing. The Gemini app wave begins October 13. Gems do not vanish overnight, but they are on a published sunset path through 2027.

This is an Apps story as much as an AI one. Skills live inside the Gemini app and most Workspace apps, use a slash command in the prompt bar, and (unlike Gems) can stack in a single chat. The catch Google keeps repeating is sync: a skill you build in the Gemini app does not automatically show up in Docs or Gmail. You create it again where you need it.
The calendar Google actually published
| Date | What changes | Who feels it first |
|---|---|---|
| Oct 5, 2026 | Skills begin rolling out in Workspace | Rapid Release domains finish by about Oct 12; Scheduled Release starts Oct 19 and runs into mid-November |
| Oct 13, 2026 | Skills begin rolling out in the Gemini app | Rapid and Scheduled domains, expected complete by mid-November |
| Nov 17, 2026 | Gems move into the Settings panel of the Gemini app | Still creatable and usable, just less front-and-center |
| Nov 2026 (personal) | Google removes Gems support for personal accounts as Skills take over | Consumer Gemini users; Opal mini-app experiment also winds down |
| No sooner than Mar 1, 2027 | Business and enterprise: Gems stop; remaining Gems auto-migrate to draft Skills; Ask a Gem Studio flows stop | Workspace business, enterprise, nonprofit |
| No sooner than Jun 1, 2027 | Education: same Gems removal and auto-migration, including Classroom / Gemini LTI surfaces | Education licenses |
Google says it will give admins at least 30 days' notice before the auto-migration details land. "No sooner than" is the important phrase on the 2027 dates: those are floors, not hard cutoffs you should schedule against without watching Workspace Updates.
Skills vs Gems, without the brochure gloss
| Capability | Gems | Skills |
|---|---|---|
| Where you use them | Separate Gem chat surfaces | Inline in unified Gemini chats and most Workspace apps |
| Stacking instructions | One Gem at a time | Layer multiple skills in one prompt |
| Invoke | Open the Gem | Type / and the skill name in the prompt bar |
| Format / portability | Google-specific Gem setup | Markdown-native SKILL.md standard; Google says you can copy skills from other platforms |
| Gemini app ↔ Workspace sync | N/A as a shared object | No automatic sync; create separately in each place |
| Workspace Studio "Ask a Gem" | Existing steps still run for now; new Ask a Gem steps blocked | Skills are the long-term path once Gems retire |
| Age gate in Workspace | Per prior Gem rules | Skills in Workspace: 18+ only; Skills in the Gemini app: all ages |
Availability for Skills in Workspace covers Business Starter through Plus, Enterprise Starter through Plus, Google AI Pro for Education, and AI Expanded Access. Skills in the Gemini app are open to Workspace customers and personal Google accounts. That split matters if your school or company mixes under-18 accounts into Workspace apps.
What to do before Monday's Rapid wave
If you are on Rapid Release, treat Monday as the start of a soft launch, not a big-bang cutover. Inventory your most-used Gems now: brand voice, meeting notes, support macros, classroom planners. Rebuild the ones you touch weekly as Skills in the surfaces where you actually work. Because sync is manual, pick a home (Gemini app or Workspace) first, then mirror only the skills that earn a second copy.
If you are on Scheduled Release, you have until about October 19 before Workspace Skills arrive, and mid-November for the Gemini app wave. Use that gap to train a pilot group and rewrite any Studio flows that still depend on Ask a Gem. Existing Ask a Gem steps keep working for now; new ones do not.
Education admins get the longest runway (into mid-2027), and Google points Classroom users toward Gemini Notebook now and Guided Learning later. That is a parallel track, not a reason to ignore Skills for staff who are over 18 and already living in Docs and Gmail.
Geeknewz verdict
Geeknewz's view: migrate your high-traffic Gems to Skills in the next two weeks if you are on Rapid Release, and before mid-November if you are Scheduled. Skills are the better long-term shape (inline, stackable, SKILL.md), but the missing Gemini-app-to-Workspace sync is a real operational tax. Do not assume auto-migration will preserve every nuance of a carefully shared Gem library. Treat March 2027 (business) and June 2027 (education) as the last safe planning horizon Google has published, and watch for the promised 30-day admin notice before you mark Gems dead on your internal wiki.
