Gemini's 40-app upgrade still leaves you work to finish

Gemini can put your groceries in a cart, but it can't finish the Instacart order. That distinction matters more to a busy household than the number of app logos attached to an AI launch.

Google's October 13 Argon rollout makes a stronger case for handing jobs to Gemini. It also makes the limits of individual connections worth reading before you subscribe for a particular chore. A model's ability to plan the work and an app's permission to complete it are separate things. This is a comparison of the published documentation, not a hands-on test.

The Gemini app announcement gives Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers access to Argon, a switch between chat and tasks, and work that can continue while you're away from the computer. It says Gemini connects to more than 40 apps. Google's Antigravity coding interface also arrives inside the Mac app.

That's a useful direction: a request can become an ongoing job rather than another answer you have to turn into action. But a connection count doesn't tell you where that job stops. Two of the everyday examples in the announcement, groceries and dinner reservations, demonstrate substantially different stopping points.

A grocery cart isn't a delivery

The Instacart help page describes checking product availability at stores and adding products to a shopping cart. Placing or managing orders, checking their status, retrieving purchase history and finding delivery slots are outside the connection's listed capabilities.

For a recipe, that could still eliminate a tedious search-and-add session. The remaining work is consequential, though: you need to finish checkout and establish when the food will arrive. Don't treat a prepared cart as evidence that dinner's ingredients are on their way.

Access has boundaries too. The connection requires a personal Google account, English, a US location and Keep Activity switched on. The documented surfaces are Gemini's mobile and web apps. A Canadian reader shouldn't assume that an existing Instacart account makes this connection available locally.

If you want groceries for a specific evening, check delivery availability yourself before building the meal around them. The assistant can help assemble a shopping list; your deadline still needs a separate check.

Booking dinner goes further

The OpenTable documentation describes checking availability and completing bookings through Reserve with Google. Gemini can also retrieve and cancel reservations. That reaches further into the transaction than the grocery connection does.

There are important exclusions: payments, menus and user reviews or ratings aren't supported through this connection. The page's introduction mentions changing reservations, but its detailed limitations say modifications require a link out to OpenTable. Until that contradiction is resolved, plan to make changes there.

The stated requirements include being at least 18, being in the US or UK, using English and a personal Google account, and enabling Keep Activity. Again, the listed supported apps are mobile and web. The Mac coding announcement isn't evidence that every connected service works in that desktop app.

For dinner planning, separate choosing the restaurant from securing the table. Check the menu and any payment requirements directly, then use a booking confirmation as the evidence that the reservation exists.

Judge the finished job

The broader Argon launch spans developers, enterprises and consumers. That breadth makes it tempting to read every capability as part of one universally available assistant. The product, account, country and connected service still determine what you can actually use.

A better subscription test is one chore you already repeat. Write down its finish line: a checked-out grocery order, a confirmed table, or a completed document. Then check which steps the connection supports and which ones still require you.

Background execution is valuable when it removes waiting and repetitive work. It isn't proof of completion. Before paying for a plan because an app appears in the launch graphic, verify the exact action you need, your country's eligibility and the handoff you'll still have to handle.
