If you hold stablecoins on a regulated platform in the EU, the date to plan around is January 8, 2027. On October 8, 2026, the European Securities and Markets Authority told national supervisors that crypto platforms authorized under MiCA should stop services for stablecoins that MiCA doesn't authorize.
ESMA's opinion changes what those platforms may still do with a balance you hold there. New purchases stop, and you shouldn't be able to add to that holding. For a limited time, and under supervision, the firm can still help you wind down the coins already on the platform. The cleanup is supposed to happen as soon as possible, and no later than three months after the opinion was published.
The outer date on that window is January 8, 2027 (CoinDesk). The opinion doesn't name individual tokens. USDT is the large example, and PYUSD is another prominent stablecoin without MiCA authorization. Several platforms have already restricted USDT for users in the EU. Issuer rules for stablecoins have applied since June 2024, and MiCA's rules for the platforms themselves took effect on July 1. The authorization net was already there. What's new is a deadline for clearing coins that never entered it.
The worry behind the opinion is the gap those coins leave. Authorized issuers have to hold proper reserves and honor redemptions. A licensed platform that still offers a coin outside that standard can make the holding look regulated when it isn't. Supervisors are supposed to close that gap.
You won't hear that from ESMA in your inbox. The opinion is written for national supervisors, and they apply it firm by firm. Two platforms can both comply and still give you different dates. Some will let you sell or withdraw during the wind-down. Others can shut that path earlier. January 8 is the latest date in the opinion, not a shared countdown on every app.
The limit covers authorized platforms and their clients in the EU. A wallet you already control sits outside it. The opinion doesn't, on its own, make a private holding illegal.
If USDT, or another stablecoin without MiCA authorization, is on an EU platform you use, read that platform's wind-down note before the deadline and take the exit it still offers.
