Geeknewz exclusive comparison built from OpenAI's DevDay 2026 recap, its admin docs for @ChatGPT in Slack and Microsoft Teams and the OpenAI Marketplace, plus Microsoft's Sept. 25 blog on the new Copilot with Home, Code, and Autopilot. No invented scoops or quotes.
Two product updates landed in the same week, and they point at the same fight: who owns the place where office work actually happens. On Sept. 29, OpenAI's DevDay pushed ChatGPT deeper into team chat and shared documents with Space, Pages, @ChatGPT mentions, and an enterprise Marketplace. Four days earlier, Microsoft put Word, Excel, and PowerPoint inside Copilot Home and started expanding Autopilot as a persistent teammate. If you buy Business or Microsoft 365 seats, you are not picking a chatbot anymore. You are picking a surface.

This exclusive is a side-by-side of those surfaces, with a plain Geeknewz take on who should pilot which stack first.
What each company actually shipped
OpenAI's workplace layer is ChatGPT-centric. Space is a shared home for teammates, files, Pages, and agents on Pro, Business, and Enterprise (desktop and web). Pages are collaborative documents for people and agents, with slides coming in the following weeks and spreadsheets listed as coming soon. You can mention @ChatGPT in Slack or Microsoft Teams from Business, Edu, and Enterprise workspaces once an admin wires a "surface" and approves company connections. Teammates can join the thread even without their own ChatGPT license. Eligible Enterprise customers can also put part of an existing OpenAI commitment toward approved partner software through the Marketplace (32 launch partners in the recap, including Adobe, Figma, Salesforce, and ServiceNow). Purchases still contract with the partner; there is no self-serve checkout yet.

Microsoft's answer is Copilot-centric. Home merges Chat and Cowork, and Office in Copilot means you can create or edit real Word, Excel, and PowerPoint files from that same place, with edits staying in sync with the Office apps. Code lets non-developers describe small apps and workflows in natural language, powered by the same underlying stack as GitHub Copilot, rolling through Frontier first. Autopilot (formerly Scout) is the persistent agent with its own identity, memory, and workspace inside your tenant, reachable from Teams, Outlook, chats, and documents. Microsoft says Home and Code start in Frontier in the coming weeks after Sept. 25, with Autopilot expanding to private preview at the end of that month. @Copilot in Teams with shared channel context was listed for private preview by month-end as well.
Surface comparison
| Job you care about | ChatGPT (DevDay week) | Microsoft Copilot (Sept. 25 refresh) |
|---|---|---|
| Shared team workspace | Space + Pages on Pro / Business / Enterprise | Home (Chat + Cowork) with Office files inside Copilot |
| Live chat mentions | @ChatGPT in Slack and Teams (admin surface required) | @Copilot in Teams (shared context; private preview timing) |
| Real Office documents | Pages now; slides soon; export to PowerPoint / Google Slides planned | Native Word, Excel, PowerPoint created and synced from Home |
| Persistent agent | Dots / specialist dots (separate DevDay track; plan-gated) | Autopilot with tenant identity, memory, and computer |
| Build small tools | Plugin extensions, Sites, Plugin Creator | Code + Copilot Managed Runtime in your M365 tenant |
| Spend / partner software | Marketplace applies part of OpenAI commitment to partners | USL for everyday Copilot; usage-based billing for agentic work; FinOps controls |
Availability math you can check against the primary posts: OpenAI's Slack/Teams guide lists Business, Edu, and Enterprise; Space is Pro, Business, and Enterprise. Microsoft's Home/Code path is Frontier-first after Sept. 25, not a same-day global flip for every Microsoft 365 tenant. That gap matters for pilots. A ChatGPT Business admin can start wiring @ChatGPT this week if the feature has reached the workspace. A Copilot Home pilot may still be waiting on Frontier enrollment even though the blog is public.
Geeknewz verdict
Geeknewz's view: if your company already lives in Slack and buys ChatGPT Business or Enterprise, Space plus @ChatGPT is the cleaner near-term experiment. You get a shared document surface and in-channel help without waiting for Microsoft's Frontier queue. If your files, identity, and compliance already sit in Microsoft 365, Copilot Home with Office inside the app is the more natural long bet, especially once Autopilot and @Copilot channel context leave private preview.
Do not treat this as a full swap of one suite for the other overnight. OpenAI still routes real Office fidelity through Pages and upcoming slides, and Marketplace is commitment reconciliation rather than an app store checkout. Microsoft still stages Home, Code, and Autopilot through Frontier and preview rings. Pick the surface that matches where your teammates already open the morning, run a two-week pilot with one real recurring task, and measure whether the work finished without a second app hop. That is the useful scorecard, not which keynote sounded bigger.
