Canva has released Craft, its first image-generation foundation model built from scratch by Canva Research. Its October 22 announcement says the model is available globally through Dream Lab, with output up to 2K. The pitch is more control over layouts and text.
For a flyer or social post, the important distinction is that generating the picture and editing its individual parts are separate steps. Check access to Magic Layers as well as Craft before planning a workflow around both.
Layout comes before rendering
Canva says Craft works in two stages: it first plans the composition, including the placement and relative size of elements and any text, then renders the image. It supports more than 30 aspect ratios, custom proportions and text generation in 55 languages. The company says its training included millions of human-made templates from Canva's library. Those are product claims, rather than results from a Geeknewz hands-on test.
For someone making a flyer or social post, the useful question is whether the result needs fewer corrections before it can be shared. A good-looking preview still needs accurate dates, readable small text and a layout that works at its final size.
Editable layers are a separate step
Canva points to its existing Magic Layers feature for converting Craft outputs into editable elements. The Magic Layers help guide says that conversion works best with graphic designs, illustrations and stylized visuals; photorealistic images may separate less cleanly.
Magic Layers accepts single-page PNG and JPG files. In the editor, select the image, open Edit, then choose Magic Layers. Once processing finishes, individual elements can be moved, resized or deleted. Results depend on the image's complexity and resolution, so check that the parts you actually need to change have separated correctly.
Check your allowance before experimenting
To find Dream Lab, Canva's Dream Lab help guide directs users to the homepage, then More → Dream Lab. It is not accessed from inside the design editor. The guide also says image generation, reference images and the Boost resolution feature can consume AI allowance.
Magic Layers draws from the shared monthly allowance too. Canva's AI usage guide explains that access depends on the account's plan, so broad Craft availability should not be read as unlimited free generation or editing.
Canva also announces public API access for Craft, while explicitly labeling its Craft integration through Canva MCP as coming soon. Dream Lab is the direct route for trying the new model: check your allowance, generate a simple design and inspect the text before sharing it.
