Apple’s new CEO said the ideal AI device is the iPhone—while a home hub waits in the wings

Smart speaker and home devices on a living room shelf

John Ternus opened his first keynote as Apple chief executive by describing the ideal AI gadget from scratch—always-on connectivity, a decent display, good cameras and mics, long battery life, easy interoperability—then landed the punchline: that device already exists, and it is the iPhone.

According to The Next Web’s Sep 20 wrap of Mark Gurman’s Power On reporting, people inside Apple thought Ternus was teeing up something else: the long-rumored home hub, internal code name J490.

The speech was strategy, not prophecy

Gurman’s read, as summarized by TNW, is blunt. OpenAI is circling an AI-first computer. Apple does not have a revolutionary new mobile form factor to unveil. The current iPhone lineup is the best stage it has for Siri AI. Framing the phone as the platonic AI device also keeps everything else—smart glasses eyed for next year, camera-equipped AirPods talked about for 2027—tethered to the franchise that actually prints money.

In other words: this was a strategy for keeping the iPhone central, not a neutral forecast of where AI hardware is going. Apple is still debating basics on glasses, including whether they carry a camera at all.

J490: the device that is actually new

The hub Gurman’s sources describe is being tested widely in employees’ homes and could ship as early as next month. Picture a roughly square screen—either on a stand that looks like a HomePod mini cut in half, or mounted on a wall. The comparison that sticks is a smaller Amazon Echo Show. The interface mashup mixes iOS, tvOS, and watchOS, and setup pairs through an iPhone.

The notable hardware trick: facial recognition through the front camera without Face ID’s depth sensor, personalizing the screen for whoever is looking at it.

Apple planned a 2024-era debut and held the hardware until the assistant was good enough. Siri AI’s launch with iOS 27 this month is what unblocked it—though a waitlist is not the body language of a company certain it has capacity. TNW also notes the assistant stack is not wholly Apple’s: Siri AI was rebuilt on a custom Google Gemini model, reportedly in the neighborhood of $1 billion a year.

Fitness+ cuts, Europe, and the Siri-or-nothing bet

Alongside the hub chatter, Gurman reported a handful of Fitness+ cuts—mainly audio-side roles behind Time to Walk / Time to Run—with less frequent new audio rather than a shutdown. He does not think the service is being killed; he does expect eventual folding into a revamped Health app. The pattern rhymes with August trims across Siri, Vision Pro immersive video, and gaming: quiet content cuts where an assistant might do more of the work.

Europe remains the unanswered clause. During WWDC week Apple said Siri AI would stay out of the EU while Digital Markets Act talks with the European Commission were unresolved. iOS 27.2 adding more Siri AI languages is not the same as market availability. A hub whose main feature is Siri has no proposition where Siri AI does not run. Google Home, by contrast, is opening to Claude, OpenClaw, and other third-party agents. Apple’s hub pitch is Siri or nothing.

Geeknewz take

Ternus told the truth Apple needs investors to believe: the phone is still the AI control plane. Gurman’s reporting told the truth builders should watch: the first net-new AI surface may be a wall-mounted screen that waited years for the assistant to catch up. Watch whether J490 ships in Europe, whether OpenAI’s dedicated AI computer makes the “perfect device is already in your pocket” line harder to repeat, and whether Apple ever lets a home hub talk to anyone but Siri.
